Context
Design a typographic publication to celebrate stitching lines and mending techniques for repairing old garments as a response to the ISTD brief - The Line.

Solution

The format of the booklet draws inspiration from a common mending technique –patching, through gathering different colour papers with varying textures to resemble the patchwork. The pages are intentionally designed in different sizes, and some texts are covered by smaller pages, creating a layered reading experience. The publication includes insights from menders, explanations of mending techniques, stitching patterns, and stories behind the mended garments.

I chose to use some vibrant colour papers to make the booklet stand out and be more visible. The decorative elements are formed by punctuation marks such as angle bracket “>”, asterisk “*”, dash “-”, as well as some characters such as “z”, “x” and “l” in different fonts and typefaces. It is my intention to maximise the use of type and link stitching patterns to typography based on their similarities. Saddle sewn binding is applied on the final outcome that corresponds to the theme of stitching and threads.
