Portalis
Visual Identity

+ Poster & Editorial Design
+ Motion Graphic
+ Marketing Strategy

Context
Design an identity for the exhibition - Portalis (“Portal” in Latin), a Catalyst Placement project from Nottingham Contemporary, collaborating with young artists from the disciplines of Fine Art, Interior Architecture, and Photography. It is a response to the exhibition: Hollow Earth: Art, Caves and The Subterranean Imagery that archived images and ideas of caves.

Solution
The design inspirations come from the exploration in Nottingham City of Caves. The key visuals are based on the experiment of texture rubbings in the cave we visited. Visualising the portal theme with irregular shapes that resemble the cave tunnel. It symbolises the unknown, the mysterious and
the mystical.

A leporello publication with artist information printed on a specialised sandstone-like texture paper is designed for visitors. A set
of 2 flyers is designed as free tickets to be given out for marketing purposes.

Based on my analysis, traditional flyer distribution may not be the optimal approach to promote the upcoming exhibition and attract attendees. As an alternative marketing strategy, I have designed a complementary pair of tickets intended for distribution. The concept is for recipients to retain one ticket for themselves while gifting the second to a guest of their choice, thereby leveraging personal networks to expand awareness and drive increased attendance.

A motion graphic projection is installed next to the entrance of the exhibition. The textured layers move and merge slowly in a continuous loop. This is part of the design that works with the lighting to guide the audience  as they navigate the exhibition, allowing them to immerse themselves in an atmospheric portal world. The irregular portal shapes created by the lights simulate the experience of exploring dark caves.
